Entrevista – Andre Davis

Written by , Posted in FASHION, INTERVIEWS

Eu me divorciei há 4 anos.

É a minha cidade.

This is the first post of my favorite tag here on the blog; the interview one! And I couldn’t have asked for a more special interviewee than Andre Davis!

Andre is, no doubt, one of the most requested hair stylists here in NY. He is known for being the genius behind Olivia Palermo’s beautiful hair, and has a list of clients that also includes Christina Aguilera, the ladies from the Bush family, actress Jane Krakowski, and several other celebrities and fashion industry big shots.

I had been struggling to find a hair stylist ever since I moved to NY. It was one big challenge because I had been getting my hair cut with the same person for over 18 years, and I just couldn’t adapt to anyone else’s style. Well, until I met Andre! Besides being undeniably talented at what he does, he is also an amazing person. I can say I am a huge fan of the stylist but an even bigger one of the man, Andre Davis.

Hope you enjoy this interview!

Please tell us a little bit about how your hair styling has evolved over the years.

I had a natural talent for styling. I had 3 sisters, and my mom was a true Diva, with a heart of Gold. I was in my teens, blow drying and curling; styling anyone who would let me. At that time, I did not have the technique to cut well, so I looked at a lot of fashion magazines, movie stars, and try them on my friends. I have always had beautiful women around me to inspire me. But my beautiful mom, who died of cancer, was my biggest inspiration, and biggest cheerleader. So my styling has evolved into a bigger vision of beautiful hair; more like a style philosophy, keeping in mind personality, and lifestyle.

I was impressed to see how fast and effortlessly you can create new hairstyles, and how amazing they look! You are truly gifted! Do you have a favorite style?

Thank you for that wonderful compliment! My favorite styles are hair with movement. I think I am famous for the long bob I created for Olivia Palermo. I really love that style because it will never go out of style, and it’s quite deceiving. People think I cut one length when I cut my lob (that is how Andre named the hair cut), but it is angled with layers, so you can wear sleek straight or curl it, or wave it for texture. And I am proud to say Allure magazine named it one of the best in 2011.

Go-to products/tools you can’t work without, and that every woman should have.

My blow dryer from Solano, medium curling iron from Hot Tools, Paul Michel great mousse, or root lifter. I use the Nexus root lifter, but they discontinued. Other than that, my scissors – can’t live without them. LOL.

You are also very well known for your exquisite work with wigs and extensions. Can you tell us a little bit about the projects you are working on at the moment?

I am constantly working on editorial, magazine, and TV; but I have always had a passion for women who had great hair loss, or thin hair. I have been working for 20 years doing extensions, and wigs. Pieces that will give women options, that won’t ruin their hair. I am now working on my custom wig creations that are seamless, only your hairstylist will know for sure! And also working on expanding on that – I am truly excited about that!

Let’s talk a little bit about the man behind the scissors…

I know how much you love your kids, and also how busy your schedule is. How do you balance your work with being a dad?

Being a Dad is the best accomplishment of my life; my son Ephrem and daughter Shalom are my life! I have been divorced for 4 years. It is a juggle; they live close to me, and I spend as much time as I can with them. I do take them to school every day. I keep telling myself; it’s the not the quantity, it’s the quality. When I am with them, I am totally theirs. I am blessed, they are beautiful and amazing kids, and so the balance is in planning my day around them. I am a proud Dad.

Your favorite spots to hang out in the city. Favorite restaurants, bars…

I am a real foodie, so I love dinning out, places that have good food. I love Catch. Beaumarchais is fun, and so is The Standard. And there are places in my neighborhood (he lives in Hell’s Kitchen), like 44 1/2 that I love. If I want a drink, I go to The Ritz bar, my friend Tommy owns it, it is on restaurant row.

What inspires you the most about NY?

I feel New York is like a huge runway. Looking at people inspires me; what they are wearing, how they are wearing their hair – good and bad. The energy in the city makes you want to work hard, dare to be the best, it’s sensory overload! But I love it, I have traveled the world, but when I am about to land, I feel the energy of this great city. It is my Hometown. As they say: If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.
